Protein is essential for life. It is the foundation for cellular function, helps to stabilize blood sugar, gives energy to the body, and more. The quality of protein is crucial. If the essential amino acids are not present or if they have been degraded and altered, then the body does not receive the benefits. Most people choose to eat animal sources of protein, however, plant-based proteins are extremely beneficial to the body and are gentler on digestion and the kidneys than animal protein.ย According to some naturopaths, 30% of protein intake should come from plant sources, especially after the age of 40. When choosing your protein, it is best to look for pastured/grass-fed beef, chicken, and eggs, as well as wild-caught fish, or a non-GMO beyond organic protein powder.
One of the easiest ways to consume adequate amounts of protein in a meal with minimal calories is through a protein smoothie. There are so many wonderful options and variations for smoothies. My daily breakfast consists of Shaklee’s Life Shake in Plain and Simple(no sugar and no flavor). I add a handful of frozen berries, a scoop of Shaklee’s Organic Green Booster, juice from a lime or lemon, and chia seeds or ground flaxseed. This is a highly nutritious and very satisfying way to incorporate healthy fats, plant-based protein, and extra greens into my diet.
